Carsten Hein was born in Hesse in 1979. He studied jazz and popular music with a major in bass guitar at the Arnhem University of the Arts in the Netherlands, followed by cultural and media management at Freie Universität Berlin. Based in Berlin, he works as a freelance bassist in a wide range of different musical genres: Indie Rock, Jazz, Contemporary classical music, Afrobeat, Reggae, Latin, Pop and others. Live or in the studio he worked with Ivy Quainoo, Ari Benjamin Meyers, Neneh Cherry, Julia Marcell, Ladi6, Augustin Maurs, Gene Pritsker, Ruffcats, Mellow Mark, Skew Siskin, Nosliw, Martin Jondo, Marcus Klossek and many more. Concerts and tours have taken him to most European countries and North Africa.
He uses the bass combined with electronics as a source for sound explorations. As a stage musician he has been involved in productions at Schauspiel Frankfurt, Ballhaus Naunynstraße Berlin, for Polly Maggoo Amsterdam and Theater Oostpol Arnhem.
As a soloist and band member, Carsten has won prizes at Jugend Jazzt, the Young Jazz award Tübingen and the Nujazzprijs Dordrecht. In November 2018 he released his latest album with his own compositions, alongside Swiss label Unit Records.
