BIO

Carsten Hein was born in Hesse in 1979. He started playing bass in bands that performed original material at an early age besides singing in choirs and learning classical piano. Based in Berlin since 2004, he works as a freelance bassist in a wide range of different musical genres: Indie Rock, Jazz, Contemporary classical music, Afrobeat, Reggae, Latin, Pop and others. Live or in the studio he worked with Ivy Quainoo, Ari Benjamin Meyers, Neneh Cherry, Julia Marcell, Ladi6, Augustin Maurs, Gene Pritsker, Kristiina Tuomi, Ruffcats, Mellow Mark, Skew Siskin, Nosliw, Martin Jondo, Marcus Klossek and many more. Concerts and tours have taken him to most European countries and North Africa.

He is equally fascinated to take up traditional roles of the bass as well as using it combined with electronics as a source for sound explorations. As a stage musician he has been involved in theater productions at Deutsches Theater Berlin, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Ballhaus Naunynstraße Berlin, for Polly Maggoo Amsterdam, Theater Oostpol Arnhem and others.

As a soloist and band member Carsten has won prizes at Jugend Jazzt, the Young Jazz award Tübingen and the Nujazzprijs Dordrecht. In November 2018 he released his latest album with his own compositions, alongside Swiss label Unit Records.
